There are two basic types of lift trucks, those which run on gas and models which run on electricity:
Internal Combustion Forklifts: The IC forklift would run on fuels like liquid propane, gas, diesel or compressed natural gas or CNG. Gas powered units are best suited for outdoor use as they produce gases and pollutants which are harmful to employees and pedestrians. Units which run on gasoline are also great to be used in bad weather conditions and in the rain. These units could lift weights about 15,000 to 35,000 pounds. Due to the fuel costs and maintenance, the gas powered models are much more costly to use than models which run on electricity, however, they cost less up front compared to electric powered units. The liquid propane models are the best choice for safe use inside.
Electric Lift Trucks: The electric lift truck units are powered by really huge batteries that must be recharged. The machines do not create any polluting air emissions as these units do not burn any fuel. They are the best alternative for warehouses and indoor use. Moreover, electric lift trucks are much quieter to run than other units and they do not need any fuel storage units. Among the disadvantages of electric powered models is that they could not lift cargo over 15,000 pounds and hence, have a slower acceleration than gasoline powered models.
Forklifts are specially designed to easily and quickly transport heavy loads with simplicity. Like the case with nearly all kinds of machines, unfortunately, forklift mishaps do happen frequently. There are some safety rules that need to be followed in order to keep everyone safe. The most important problem is recruiting a qualified operator, who will be able to show you a valid forklift license.
There are many different styles of lift trucks offered on the market. Deciding which one is right for your specific needs will be based on the type of environment your machine will have to operate in, like for instance, indoors or outdoors or both and what types of loads that you have to transport. Once you understand your specific needs, it would be really easy to match up to the best kind of lift truck. When you know all your needs exactly you will be able to make the best choice.
Another great way to get first hand experience on the various lift truck models is the try renting your forklift. This would also enable you to see all the possible options available to you. This is a cheaper way to determine if the equipment you have selected can keep up with you on the job site.
