Forklift Battery Safety
The huge industrial sized batteries used to power electric lift trucks must be charged regularly and correctly maintained. Safety procedures should always be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is vital to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is essential for anybody working with a lift truck battery. Complete protection includes safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect both skin and clothing from leaked acid or other residue is to put on an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Near the charging area should be an emergency eyewash post. The path to the station should not be blocked and an injured worker should be able to go to the eyewash station from the charging area in 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It must be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are prohibited in the vicinity of a battery and charging area. Do not allow items like lighters or matches to be utilized when an employee is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is important to keep the battery charging area well ventilated. The recharging process can release gas. These gases are both explosive and poisonous.
